Population 7,200,000 (San Francisco Bay Area- UA); 805,235 (San Francisco- CC)

History

San Francisco (Spanish for "Saint Francis") was founded on June 29, 1776, when colonists from Spain established a fort at the Golden Gate and a mission named for St. Francis of Assisi a few miles away. The California Gold Rush of 1849 brought rapid growth, making it the largest city on the West Coast at the time. Due to the growth of its population, San Francisco became a consolidated city-county in 1856.

Information

San Francisco is the leading financial and cultural center of Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area. There is now rapid growth in dot-com industries, located South of Market, and in nearby Silicon Valley. Tourism is the key industry and nets San Francisco billions of dollars each year (US$6.5 billion in 1998). Although the Financial District, Union Square, and Fisherman's Wharf are well-known around the world, San Francisco is also characterized by its numerous culturally rich streetscapes featuring mixed-use neighborhoods anchored around central commercial corridors to which residents and visitors alike can walk.

Bay Area Ministries

YWAM in the San Francisco Bay area is a movement of decentralized but interlinked ministries. At present we have 5 distinct operating locations and are moving towards having 15 operating locations. You can see some of them at the links provided below. The SF Bay Area consists of 101 cities spread out over 9 counties. It is the home of Silicon Valley, Napa Valley (California wine), Berkeley and Stanford colleges which are world famous and headquarters for Yahoo, Ebay, Apple, Google as well as world renown brand companies like Levi Strauss, Lucas Arts, Dolby Studios and Oracle to name just a few. Our vision is to plant a variety of YWAM locations that may be doing church planting, evangelism, mercy ministries, business as mission, coffee house ministry, children at risk work or whatever God would lead that would be relevant to that area, people group or section of society.
