Population 1,290,000 (UA)
Originally founded as a Viking settlement, it evolved into the kingdom of Dublin and became the island’s principle city following the Norman invasion. Following the partition of Ireland in 1922, the new parliament, the Oireachtas, was located in Leinster House. Dublin became the capitol of the Irish Free State and later the Republic of Ireland.
Founded as a Viking settlement, the city has been Ireland's primary city for most of the island's history since medieval times. Today, it has one of the fastest growing populations of any European capital city. Dublin is a historical and contemporary cultural centre for the island of Ireland as well as a modern centre of education, the arts, administrative function, economy and industry.
